Imbolc Festival of Lights

Imbolc - Festival of Light

After the end of the Raunächte (Twelve Nights), January is fairly quiet. The gates between the worlds are closed again, but already in February, foolish spirits push them wide open again.

February is a time of purification; formerly, februa was the name given to means of purification and purification. Candlemas, or St. Brigid's Day on February 1st, is the time of the White Goddess. She brings a new beginning; the days become noticeably longer. From Candlemas onward, artificial light was no longer used in many areas. Birch branches were brought into the house, and everything was thoroughly cleaned.

Anyone who thinks that Carnival is just a way to slip into a different role and not have to follow the rules fails to recognize that it is a very old tradition: all the people in costume embody spirits, a wild crowd that has come to awaken the spirits and stimulate the forces of growth.

It doesn’t take much to celebrate Imbolc:

Take a pinch of salt, some rosemary and some cinnamon, mix everything together in equal parts, take a white candle (tea light) and sprinkle some of the mixture on the tea light, light the candle and concentrate on the wishes you have for the next few months, say them out loud.
